Long Beach Man In Wheelchair Dies After Being Struck By A Vehicle

An automobile struck a man in a wheelchair this past weekend in Long Beach.  The victim did not survive the collision.  KTLA News Channel Five reports the accident occurred this past Saturday evening at the intersection of Radnor Ave and Stearns Street.

Accident Details

Early reports indicate a ’16 Honda Civic was traveling west along Stearns Street when it struck a man in a wheelchair.  Emergency medical personnel made a beeline to the site of the collision.  These responders subsequently performed life-saving measures.  However, the victim did not survive.  First responders declared the victim dead at the accident scene.

The police who responded to the accident arrested the driver of the automobile that slammed into the man in the wheelchair.  This driver is now facing charges for driving under the influence of alcohol and also for vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.  However, police are still requesting that those who witnessed the accident or have any information relating to the accident to reach out to provide those accounts as they will help ensure the negligent driver is found guilty.

The Lawsuit to Follow

The individual behind the wheel of the Civic at the time of the accident has been identified as Joseph Maez, age 26.  The victim has not yet been identified as his family will be notified before the general public.  Maez was arrested yet it is not guaranteed that he will be punished.  He is currently being held on bail in excess of six figures.  The family of the victim needs a savvy attorney who can prove the driver acted negligently.  Negligence means failing to provide due care for those in his or her vicinity.

The victim’s family will likely file a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver who caused the crash.  If this lawsuit is successful, it will obtain the financial compensation necessary to cover the cost of the victim’s funeral and burial.  The money obtained through the lawsuit will also be used to help offset the family’s loss of comfort, loss of financial support and additional losses caused by the collision and subsequent death.
